After a health scare, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners has been cleared to resume training.

Rayners, 29, was sidelined for a couple of weeks as he was released from the Bafana Bafana squad that played Zimbabwe and Rwanda in FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers recently due to “medical reasons”, as initially stated by the national team.

“As you know, Rayners came from the national team. Thanks to God, his biology and physiology, we were able to see that, and thanks to the effort of the doctors and the exams he did, there’s no issue in terms of a cardiac question that will take him out of his career, because in this kind of situation, everybody stays afraid,” said Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, ahead of the weekend CAF Champions League match against Nigerian side, Remo Stars.

“No, thank God, no. It’s a minor thing; you also need to give him some time. He’s now starting to train with the team. So he was two weeks absolutely without training, but he started (on Wednesday), and he trained, already integrating into the team, and he made all the training sessions.

“So we should expect Iqraam to now get on with his condition and be available again for the team,” concluded Cardoso.

The Cape Town-born forward is one of the finest local strikers ever produced, with 75 goals scored and 38 assists for top-flight South African teams in 198 games.
