FC Barcelona have seen enough of Lamine Yamal, and a few days after his 18th birthday, they have handed him the club’s iconic jersey.
From the new season, Yamal, who celebrated his birthday on 13 July, will don the number 10 jersey, signaling his importance to the Blaugrana.
“This is the beginning of a journey that I hope will be very long and full of victories,” said the youngster, who has put pen to paper on a new six-year contract.
“I wish to keep growing, because I’m still very young (in the game), but above all to keep winning … I’ll give everything to make the fans happy … This is my lifetime club and the best in the world.”
The jersey has been worn by legends such as Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, and Diego Maradona, and briefly belonged to Ansu Fati, who failed to live up to expectations and has now been loaned to French club Monaco.
Yamal, however, has been absolutely impressive. Last season, he played 55 matches, netted 18 goals, and finished the campaign with 25 assists.
“Messi has made his own path; I’m going to make mine, and the number 10 comes from Ansu now. So, I will try to make all the Cules happy, those who are there and those who are at home.”
