The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a prize money increase for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed this during a press briefing on Saturday in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of the start of the tournament on Sunday.
Motsepe announced the champions will take home $10 million (R168 million), an increase from $7 million (R117 million).
“It was less than $5 million (in the previous editions), and we increased it to $7 million (in 2023). So, if you win, you’ll (now) get $10 million, and that’s the key objective as we move forward. We will continue to increase the prize money for the most important competition in Africa,” said Motsepe.
CAF further confirmed the AFCON will move from a two-year to a four-year cycle.
After AFCON 2027 in East Africa, the continental competition will be held in 2028, 2032, and 2036.
For this year’s edition, Morocco will face Comoros in the opener at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, 21 December.
Ivory Coast are the defending champions.
