In a shock move, Steve Barker has left Stellenbosch FC to join Tanzanian club, Simba SC, as their new Head Coach.

Simba made the announcement late on Friday, ending speculation on the future of Barker, with the Cape outfit.

Stellenbosch FC have also confirmed Barker’s departure.

“A farewell message to a man who truly embodied what Stellenbosch FC stood for. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, Coach Steve,” said Stellenbosch, in a statement.

“Your passion, leadership and belief shaped more than a team you shaped a culture, a family and a standard we will always be proud of. You gave us everything, every touchline moment, every victory, every lesson.

“You will always have a special place in our hearts. We will miss you in the dugout, but your legacy will live on in this club and in all of us. Thank you for giving us your all.”

Barker, 57, was the longest-serving coach in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), having guided Stellenbosch FC since 2017.

He’s the nephew of the late revered Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker, who won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations with South Africa’s senior national team.
