ActionSA has praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for what it describes as his unwavering courage in exposing alleged corruption within the South African Police Service, saying his actions helped trigger sweeping investigations into alleged criminality and political interference in the country’s criminal justice system.
In a statement released on Monday, ActionSA president Herman Mashaba marked the first anniversary of Mkhwanazi’s now-famous 6 July 2025 press conference, during which the senior police officer publicly levelled explosive allegations against senior figures within law enforcement.
Mashaba described the press briefing as a defining moment in South Africa’s fight against corruption, arguing that it shattered a culture of silence within the police service and forced authorities to confront allegations involving powerful individuals.
“Today marks exactly a year since the historic 6 July Durban press conference where he blew the whistle on unfettered corruption within the SAPS,” Mashaba said.
He said the disclosures implicated several high-ranking officials in conduct that allegedly undermined the rule of law and the very institutions tasked with protecting South Africans.
According to ActionSA, the fallout from Mkhwanazi’s allegations ultimately led to the establishment of the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Alleged Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System.
The party said the commission has since become a critical platform for scrutinising allegations of corruption, abuse of power and political interference within the country’s criminal justice system, with numerous witnesses appearing to account for their actions in both public office and private business.
Mashaba credited Mkhwanazi’s intervention with preventing what he called “business as usual” for individuals allegedly intent on capturing the state and weakening law enforcement institutions.
He argued that, without the police general’s decision to speak publicly, efforts to expose corruption at senior levels may never have gained momentum.
ActionSA further said Mkhwanazi has become a symbol of integrity at a time when confidence in public institutions remains under pressure.
The party described his actions as demonstrating the professionalism and courage expected of senior police leaders responsible for enforcing the law without fear or favour.
Mashaba likened Mkhwanazi’s stance against corruption to a “David and Goliath” struggle, saying the commissioner had shown exceptional resolve despite the personal and professional risks associated with exposing alleged wrongdoing.
The party also reaffirmed its support for Mkhwanazi’s statement made during the 2025 press conference that “there can never be peace between a policeman and a criminal,” describing the remark as an enduring commitment to the fight against organised crime and corruption.
ActionSA concluded by thanking Mkhwanazi for his public service and wished him strength and wisdom as he continues to carry out his national responsibilities.
The party said it would continue advocating for independent, accountable and corruption-free criminal justice institutions, arguing that strengthening these bodies remains essential to restoring public trust and ensuring the rule of law prevails in South Africa.
