José Riveiro’s start with Al Ahly leaves much to be desired.
The Spaniard, who joined after leaving Orlando Pirates, watched from the dugout as Al Ahly lost 2-0 to Brazilian side Palmeiras in Group A of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday.
Al Ahly’s defeat at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the northeastern US state, leaves them at the bottom of the group and on the brink of an exit. They only have a point after drawing 0-0 with Inter Miami in their first match.
Palmeiras maintained top spot in Group A after capitalising on two second-half lapses to defeat Al Ahly after a near hour-long weather delay.
“Of course we are not happy because we lost, but we have another game, and we hope we win and we can qualify,” said Al Ahly forward Trezeguet to FIFA.
“The whole team will be better next game, for sure, because we came here to make something. And God willing, in the next game, we will fight to qualify.”
Al Ahly will take on Portuguese outfit Porto in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 24 June, and anything but a win will see them immediately return to Cairo.
