Al Ahly-Riveiro Combination a Mismatch

MISMATCH: Egyptian journalist Amr Famhy believes José Riveiro was never the right man for Al Ahly. Photo: Al Ahly

Former Al Ahly coach José Riveiro was never the right man for the Egyptian powerhouse.

This is the view of Egyptian journalist Amr Famhy.

Famhy was speaking to Radio 2000 after Al Ahly sacked the Spaniard, just three months into his new job, following his move from Orlando Pirates.

“It seemed like a mismatch from the beginning,” asserted Famhy.

“Al Ahly invested a lot in the transfer market, but there was no improvement. The fans were also not happy with the playing style. That slow build up doesn’t work here. Ahly also wants immediate results. There is no time,” he said.

“He also didn’t seem to have control of the dressing room. Al Ahly has big stars, and he didn’t know how to deal with them. He was too soft for such a big team. The players also didn’t have confidence in him. There’s a conspiracy theory that they lost (2-0) on purpose against Pyramids.

“He was always under pressure because he was not the first choice. The coach that Al Ahly wanted actually went to Saudi Arabia. Some people are now longing for the return of Pitso Mosimane. But it’s unlikely because he was sacked by the board, and they won’t admit their wrongs.”

Riveiro was a replacement for Swiss coach Marcel Koller, who won 12 trophies with the club.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly has decided to deduct 25% of the players’ monthly salaries following their poor run of form, with a solitary win in their last seven matches.
