The South African Under-17 men’s national team will depart for Qatar today ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) finally released the squad on Wednesday night, with just four days before their first match.
Vela Khumalo’s team is in Group A and will face Bolivia (3 November), hosts Qatar (6 November) and Italy (9 November). None of the teams in Group A were at the last U17 World Cup in 2023.
The SA U17 coach, Khumalo, said he was happy with the players at his disposal and expects a good performance in the tournament.
“I think from what I saw, and I’ve been following Bolivia and the other teams, I think we stand a good chance of coming out of the group if we can apply ourselves,” said Khumalo.
“We can get out of the group from what I saw. But you never know if that was the true reflection of the teams or if they were still preparing. But honestly speaking, we stand a good chance of going out of the group.”
Amajimbos have been in camp in Johannesburg for the past few days and played a friendly match against their Malawi counterparts away on Sunday.
