Police in the Southern Cape are investigating an incident in which the Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality, Councillor Nokuzola “Noksi” Kolwapi, allegedly discharged a firearm during a ceremonial gathering on Sunday.
The matter surfaced after a video began circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing Kolwapi firing a gun in the presence of several people. The incident is alleged to have taken place during a Mgidi celebration held for her son, Tsepiso Martin (18), who completed his matric this year.
The footage has sparked widespread discussion online, with several social media users expressing concern about the alleged conduct. One user on X wrote: “The video of izibazana discharging a firearm was disappointing enough. Imagine learning that she’s the Deputy Mayor of the municipality.” Another user commented: “You would think that a person who is a deputy mayor would have the maturity to understand just unsafe it is to fire a gun in public, but alas, it’s an indication of how far SA has deteriorated.”
On Sunday night, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Victor Molosi Region issued a statement voicing concern about the circulating video and the allegations linked to it. The party said it regarded any alleged discharge of a firearm, whether in a public or private space, as a serious matter, particularly when it involved an elected public official.
The ANC called on relevant law enforcement authorities to urgently conduct a thorough and independent investigation to verify the authenticity of the video and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. It said the law should be allowed to take its course without fear or favour.
“The ANC reiterates its commitment to the rule of law, public safety and responsible leadership,” the statement said. The organisation added that should the allegations be substantiated, appropriate action would be taken in line with the law as well as the party’s constitutional and disciplinary processes. The public was urged to remain calm while investigations continue.
According to the Knysna-Plett Herald, charges relating to the alleged discharging of a firearm and pointing of a firearm have been laid at Kwanokuthula police station. The publication reported that the celebrations were attended by members of the community and that Bitou Mayor Jessica Kamkam and council speaker Mavis Busakwe were also present.
Southern Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies confirmed that Kwanokuthula detectives were investigating a case of pointing a firearm. He said the case arose from an alleged incident that took place in Sajini Street, Kwanokuthula, on Sunday, 21 December.
Spies said no further details could be released at this stage, as investigations were ongoing. At the time of publication, Kolwapi had not issued a public response to the allegations.
