In a shocking incident that has rattled the Zambian football community, armed robbers stormed the secretariat of Mufulira Wanderers Football Club shortly after their Week 20 Zambia Super League match against Nchanga Rangers at Shinde Stadium on Sunday, 16 February 2026.
The daring robbery occurred around 18:00 hours, when the assailants held club staff at gunpoint and made off with K181,000 ($9,900) in cash collected from gate takings.
The robbers also hijacked a Toyota Harrier vehicle, registration number AIF 4314, belonging to the club’s Logistics Manager, Mr. Patrick Mwanza. The vehicle was intended for transporting the money to Mopani Security for safekeeping.
According to a statement from the club, the suspects fired gunshots into the air to scare off people nearby before fleeing the scene. Police were alerted immediately and launched a manhunt. The hijacked vehicle was later recovered abandoned by the robbers, but the stolen cash remains unrecovered.
Mufulira Wanderers President George Katongo expressed deep regret over the incident while assuring stakeholders of the club’s full cooperation with authorities.
“Mufulira Wanderers Football Club deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and assures all stakeholders that we are cooperating fully with the police and taking measures to strengthen security going forward,” he said in the official release.
The Zambia Police Service continues its investigation to track down the culprits and bring them to justice. The robbery comes at a time when the club, affectionately known as “Mighty Mufulira Wanderers” or “Abena Milambo,” is competing in the top flight of Zambian football.
Fans and supporters have called for enhanced security measures at football venues across the country to protect gate collections and staff following high-stakes matches. No injuries were reported during the incident, but the event has raised concerns about safety in the aftermath of league games.
