Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has admitted that the practice match against Jamaica over the weekend did not go according to plan.

South Africa’s senior national team drew 1-1 with the Reggae Boyz in Mexico City. The match was played behind closed doors at the Estadio Hidalgo as Bafana Bafana put the final touches to their preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico on Thursday, 11 June.

“The performance was not what I expected. I think we have to analyse the game very well and see what was really wrong and try to make it better in the next few days so that we are ready for the first game against Mexico,” Broos said.

“I thought we were close to getting to where we want to be before the opening match, but again, it was, for me, a disappointing game. So, yes, I have to look at what went wrong. I think it was also a matter of mentality. We have to do more, much more, than what we did this to have good results in the World Cup in the next few weeks.”

Broos, however, has assured South Africa that Bafana Bafana would put up a great fight against the Mexicans.

“We know that we have the support of the nation and we felt it in the last few days, and last week when we started the preparations (for the World Cup) in South Africa. All of South Africa is supporting us. This is something we have to remember on Thursday when the game starts, that we are playing for our nation. We are playing for all those people who believe in us.”
