South Africa’s national teams have been handsomely rewarded by the sports ministry for their respective successes in recent times.
The senior football team Bafana Bafana will receive R5 million to share amongst the players and technical team.
This comes after Hugo Broos’s men qualified for the FIFA 2026 World Cup, ahead of Nigeria and Benin in Group C of the qualifiers.
“This investment is a testament to their hard work and the pride they instill in our nation,” said sports minister Gayton McKenzie.
He was speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday.
Still on the football front, the senior women’s national team, Banyana Banyana, will share R1 million following their qualification for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.
Amajita, the SA U20 team, was also allocated R1 million after reaching the Last 16 of this year’s FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by Chile.
The juniors, Amajimbos, who are out in Qatar participating in the FIFA U17 World Cup, will get half a million.
Meanwhile, the Proteas, who reached the Women’s Cricket World Cup final, falling to India, have a reward of R1 million.
The Springbok Women rugby team was also not left out, getting R1 million for qualifying for the 2025 Rugby World Cup in England.
