Bafana Bafana’s Cairo adventure is not over yet. Fresh from a commanding 5-0 victory over Eritrea, South Africa will remain in the Egyptian capital for a few more days before facing the hosts, the Pharaohs, in an international friendly on Sunday.
The emphatic win over Eritrea has given Bafana valuable momentum in their pursuit of a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania set to jointly host the continental tournament next June.
It was a performance that combined attacking flair with ruthless finishing, as Bafana turned the Al-Salam Stadium into a stage for one of their most convincing displays of the campaign.
Relebohile Mofokeng struck twice, while Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh were also on target as South Africa swept Eritrea aside.
The victory followed Bafana’s opening qualifying win over Guinea and strengthened their start to the road towards AFCON 2027.
But there is little time to celebrate. The Pharaohs await.
Bafana’s decision to remain in Cairo gives the squad an opportunity to recharge before facing one of the continent’s most recognisable football sides.
Egypt will provide a markedly different challenge from Eritrea and could give the South African technical team an important opportunity to assess the depth and balance of the squad.
For the players, it is also a chance to carry the confidence generated by Wednesday’s five-goal performance into another high-profile international encounter.
Against Egypt, Bafana can test their attacking rhythm, defensive organisation and ability to compete against quality opposition, all valuable lessons with the AFCON qualification campaign still unfolding.
