Botswana is in mourning following the death of the man who put their senior national football team on the map, Stanley Tshosane.

Tshosane, 68, died on Friday morning, as confirmed by his family.

He was regarded as a national icon in Botswana after he guided the Zebras to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.

Tshosane earned a nomination in the 2011 CAF Coach of the Year category for his work.

He had two spells with the Zebras, first in 2002 as caretaker coach and from 2008, when he impressed the Botswana Football Association (BFA), until 2013, when he was dismissed after some disappointing results.

“Mr. Tshosane was not only a dedicated family man but also a national icon in football—having served as both player and coach for BDF XI and later leading the Botswana National Team (The Zebras) to their historic first qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012. His legacy in Botswana football will live on through generations,” the BFA noted.

“Let us stand in solidarity with his family during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and pray that they find strength and peace.

“May Bra Stan’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
