Boxing South Africa’s patience with super-middleweight boxer Asemahle Wellem is running thin.
BSA has slapped the Eastern Cape-born Wellem with a precautionary suspension of his boxing license following “repeated transgressions.”
“Following several repeated transgressions and a violation of sub-regulation 16 of Boxing South Africa Regulations of 2004, the Board of Boxing South Africa has resolved to place Asemahle Wellem on precautionary suspension effective from Thursday, 24 July 2025,” stated BSA.
“Wellem’s professional boxing licence is suspended, pending the outcome of a formal disciplinary hearing. As a result of this suspension, the national title has been declared vacant.”
This means BSA has stripped ‘The Predator’ of the SA super-middleweight title, and the 24-year-old is now a former champion.
BSA finally acted after Wellem went to fight in Tanzania without a clearance.
He’s due to fight Nigerian boxer Idowa Mustorpha Rasheed in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, on Saturday. He’s also had a couple of previous fights in Tanzania despite being on an automatic 90-day suspension following his eighth-round stoppage loss to Australian boxer Conor Wallace in Australia.
BSA, as a regulator, grants licences to boxers who wish to fight abroad, and Wellem, however, has defied BSA, culminating in the suspension of his boxing license.
“Further announcements about what will happen regarding the now vacant national title will be made in due course,” added BSA.
