Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has been entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the team.

Amakhosi co-coach Cedric Kaze announced on Wednesday evening that Petersen is their new leader, succeeding Zitha Kwinika, who’s been wearing the armband this season.

“We decided as the technical staff to appoint Petersen as the club captain going forward,” said Kaze, after the goalless draw against Siwelele FC at FNB Stadium.

The 30-year-old has always been regarded as one of the leaders in the Chiefs camp, amongst the likes of defenders Kwinika and Inacio Miguel.

Petersen joined Chiefs from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2021, and since then, he’s kept 25 clean sheets in 59 matches for the Phefeni Glamour Boys.

Meanwhile, Kaze has admitted that their lack of goals is a major concern, with Chiefs managing a paltry eight goals in nine league matches this season, though they are fourth in the standings.

“Every team has its challenges, and we have to admit, right now, our biggest challenge is scoring goals,” added Kaze.

“We are not leaking goals at the back, but that being said, it’s true we are looking for every possibility to make things happen (upfront).”

Chiefs will return to action on 31 October when they take on Durban City at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in a league clash.
