KwaZulu-Natal club Royal AM has been expelled from the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
This comes after the PSL’s Board of Governors met on Thursday, 10 April, in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Last week, the PSL’s executive committee made a decision to expel Royal AM, and at the Sandton Convention Centre, the decision was ratified by the PSL’s 31 clubs (minus Royal AM) that it was in the interest of the league to get rid of the club that’s owned by businesswoman, Shauwn Mkhize.
The executive committee had argued that “Royal AM misrepresented material information to the league in its application for renewal submitted on 1 July 2024… Royal AM transferred shares contrary to the provisions of article 14.6 of the NSL constitution.”
Article 14.6 states, “Should any sale, transfer, or disposition take place in contravention of this Article, the Executive Committee will immediately, upon the matter coming to its attention, recommend to the Board of Governors that the membership concerned or the registration of any person or entity directly or indirectly involved in the transaction be cancelled or terminated, and that appropriate disciplinary action be taken where necessary.”
The Board of Governors is made up of 16 top-flight clubs and 16 from the National First Division, now known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The top flight, South Africa’s top tier, will conclude the season with 15 teams. This means that Royal AM’s results from the 11 matches they played this season will be expunged. This will result in the log changing significantly considering five teams had beaten Royal AM and collected three points each.
Royal AM also played to five draws, and any team that collected a point from them would then lose it.
