Bafana Bafana played to a disappointing goalless draw against Tanzania at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday.

To his defence, Bafana mentor Hugo Broos did sound a warning prior to the match that it was not a must-win clash but rather to cast his eye on the new players, and true to his word, Bafana did not play as well as expected.

The hosts kicked off with three debutants: Deano van Rooyen, Simphiwe Selepe, and Khulumani Ndamane, and the latter was named Man of the Match after an impressive display in central defence.

Bafana enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession for the better part of the match but rarely created chances in front of approximately 10,000 fans.

Despite the cold performance on a cold night, Broos says he achieved his objective.

“We had a totally new team, with players who have never played together before, except those who play for the same team. So, it was not easy. I said it before the game: the result is not important, and for me it was not important,” reiterates Broos.

“Sure, we wanted to win the game, and we could have won the game because we had some chances. But the performance was more important. I’m happy with what I saw. You should not underestimate the fact that when you bring 23 players together and you select 11 to play a game, players who have never played together, it is not easy.”
