Police in Limpopo have launched a major operation targeting suspects linked to a R10 million insurance murder-for-payout scheme, with several arrests already made and more expected.
According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, officers are currently executing seven warrants of arrest in connection with the alleged syndicate.
Three suspects were arrested on Tuesday morning, including two brothers and a traditional healer believed to have been involved in the crimes. Police said the suspects are linked to a broader network accused of orchestrating murders in order to claim life and funeral insurance benefits.
The arrests are connected to former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela, who was arrested in October 2024 while on duty. Kutumela has since been dismissed from the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Investigators believe members of the syndicate took out life and funeral insurance policies on at least 10 victims before they were murdered. The suspects would then allegedly claim the insurance payouts, with authorities estimating the scheme to be worth about R10 million.
Kutumela remains in custody along with three other accused, including her sister, daughter and elder brother, as the investigation continues.
Mathe said the latest arrests form part of ongoing efforts by police to dismantle organised criminal networks operating in the province.
She added that additional arrests are expected as investigators continue to track down other individuals believed to be involved in the scheme.
The Limpopo operation follows several similar police takedowns in the province in recent months, as authorities intensify efforts to combat insurance fraud and violent crimes linked to financial gain.
Police have indicated that the suspects will appear in court once the arrest process is completed. Investigations into additional victims and possible further insurance claims linked to the syndicate are ongoing.
