CAF Punishes Senegal and Morocco for AFCON Final Incidents

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed out heavy sanctions following the ugly scenes in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final on 18 January.

Senegal overcame hosts Morocco 1-0 in Rabat, but the final was marred by controversial moments, including Senegal walking off the field when Morocco was awarded a penalty at the death.

The match later resumed and the penalty was saved, forcing the game into extra time and Senegal scored the winner.

Senegal have been fined over R10 million, while head coach Pape Thiaw will serve a five-match ban.

Morocco, meanwhile, have also incurred similar fines.

The CAF Disciplinary Board has imposed these sanctions;

𝙎𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙡;

Head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw is suspended for five (5) official CAF matches for his unsporting conduct in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity and for bringing the game into disrepute. He was also fined USD 100,000 (R1.5 million).

Senegalese winger Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye is suspended for two (2) official CAF matches, for his unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

Forward Ismaila Sarr is suspended for two (2) official CAF matches for his unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has been fined USD 300,000 (R4.7 million) for the improper conduct of its supporters, which brought the game into disrepute in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) was fined USD 300,000 (R4.7 million) for the unsporting conduct of their players and technical staff in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity. The unsporting conduct of their players and the technical staff also brought the game into disrepute (in relation to walking off the pitch).

The Senegalese Football Football (FSF) was also fined USD 15,000 (R234 000) for the misconduct of its National Team, due to five (5) of its players having received cautions.

𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙘𝙤

Captain Achraf Hakimi is suspended for two (2) official CAF matches, with one (1) of these matches being suspended for one (1) year from the date of this decision, for his unsporting behaviour.

Ismaël Saibari has been suspended for three (3) official CAF matches for his unsporting behaviour. Saibari was also fined USD 100,000 (R1.5 million).

The Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) was fined USD 200,000 (R3.1 million), for the inappropriate behaviour of the stadium’s ball boys.

The Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) was fined USD 100,000 (R1.5 million) for the improper conduct of their National Team players and technical staff, who invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s work, in violation of the principles of fair play and integrity, as stated in Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

The Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) was fined USD 15,000 (R1.5 million) for the use of lasers by its supporters.

On the protest that was lodged by the Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) regarding alleged violations by the Senegalese FootballFederation (FSF) of Articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Disciplinary Board rejected the protest. Senegal, therefore, will not be stripped off the title.
