Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior says the club cannot wait to see new signing Luke Baartman in action.
The 19-year-old has been added to the squad on a free transfer.
African Times reported earlier on Tuesday that Baartman was declared a free agent by the Premier Soccer League dispute resolution chamber (DRC), in the matter involving his former club Cape Town Spurs.
Baartman claimed he should be freed since his “professional contract” with Spurs was now “invalid” because the club has been relegated from the professional ranks to the ABC Motsepe League.
Spurs, in turn, stood firm on the legal principle of pacta sunt servanda: a contract is a contract.
This website reported that Baartman was on his way to Naturena, and indeed, he’s put pen to paper with the Phefeni Glamour Boys, much to the delight of Motaung Junior.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Luke to our team,” he says.
“He is an exciting young talent that we’ve been monitoring for the past few seasons both at the club level, in the Bayhill Cup—where he was voted player of the tournament—and on the U-17 national team that played at AFCON. We believe he will bring valuable versatility, playing both as a center-forward and a winger. We look forward to seeing him in action soon.”
The junior international joins Amakhosi from Cape Town Spurs, where he played in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last term.
However, it’s highly likely that Spurs would appeal the DRC decision with the SAFA Tribunal, meaning Baartman may have to wait for his Chiefs debut.
Amakhosi’s other signing from Spurs, Asanele Velebayi, is in the same boat, with Spurs taking the matter to arbitration.
Chiefs also announced the signing of Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro on Tuesday.
