Kaizer Chiefs have announced a “strategic partnership” with Springs Home Sweepers Football Club, a move that is key ahead of Amakhosi’s return to the continental stage.
For the first time since 2021, Chiefs will participate in a CAF club competition.
Four years ago, Chiefs went all the way to the final of the CAF Champions League, only to falter at the last hurdle, losing 3-0 to Al Ahly in a one-legged final at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
Chiefs secured their return to CAF football after winning the 2025 Nedbank Cup, which paves the way to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will be joined by Stellenbosch FC.
The partnership with Home Sweepers was necessary. For one, CAF’s club licensing regulations stipulate that clubs must either operate a women’s team or have an official partnership with one to be eligible for interclub competitions.
Chiefs, however, argue that the club always intended to contribute to women’s football.
“The club’s involvement in the women’s game has always been a priority,” stated Chiefs.
“Over the past few years, Chiefs and Home Sweepers have cultivated a collaborative relationship, sharing insights and working closely to uplift the women’s football landscape. This newly formalized partnership will continue in that spirit, with a focus on strategic and technical development to ensure sustained success both on and off the pitch.”
Chiefs added, “The selection of Home Sweepers as a partner club is especially meaningful. The Springs-based club is owned by Joseph ‘Skheshekheshe’ Mkhonza, a former Amakhosi player and father of the late Siphiwe Mkhonza, who also played for the Glamour Boys.”
Chiefs boss Dr. Kaizer Motaung was also pleased to fulfill their obligation to the women’s game.
“I am excited to see this partnership coming to fruition. Equally, I am happy that finally we have an agreement with the women’s team, Home Sweepers, owned by our very own Kaizer Chiefs legend, Joseph Mkhonza,” said Motaung.
“This collaboration is a significant milestone for our club, as we continue to invest in the development of women’s football in South Africa. We believe in empowering women in sport and providing opportunities for them to shine. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to growing the beautiful game and fostering a more inclusive sporting environment. We look forward to a successful partnership and to witnessing the incredible talent of these women on the pitch.”
Home Sweepers played their first match under the new partnership this past weekend against Wits University at Sturrock Park in Johannesburg. Their next fixture is a home game against Blue Birds Football Academy at the Kwa-Thema Stadium on 13 July.
