China wary of kidnap gangs in Nigeria

CHINA has reiterated a warning to its nationals in Nigeria to strengthen security amid the threat of kidnap gangs.

The Chinese Embassy disclosed that the danger was prevalent especially in the northern parts of Nigeria, particularly the states of Kaduna, Kogi, Niger and Zamfara, all in the north and the capital, Abuja.

China’s embassy in Nigeria stated that at present, the security situation in the West African country remained complicated, severe and kidnapping cases occurred from time to time.

“It is reported that recently, armed groups have become more active in relevant areas of Nigeria, waiting for opportunities to carry out kidnappings,” the embassy stated.

The embassy and consulates in Nigeria have reminded Chinese citizens and companies in the aforementioned areas to strengthen security precautions.

Nigeria is on a knife-edge after results of the February 25 presidential election had the electoral commission declaring Bola Tinubu as the winner.

This has triggered an appeal at the courts by his main rivals in a country whose status as Africa’s economic and political powerhouse is shaky.
