Former Bafana Bafana coach Dr. Pitso Mosimane has expressed interest in returning to the head coach position of South Africa’s senior national football team, Bafana Bafana.
Bafana Bafana will be without a coach after this year’s FIFA World Cup, as the Belgian, Hugo Broos, will step down to retire from the game.
Mosimane said, “I’m interested. The AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) medal is the one that I want to close everything (in his career). That’s the medal I don’t have.”
The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns coach was chatting to podcaster Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh on his SMWX show on Wednesday.
“I would love to win the AFCON with Bafana Bafana. That’s the one I want,” he continued.
“I’m not campaigning. SAFA will put whoever they think is right. But if you ask me to sign the contract, I’ll sign it today because it means a lot to me. I think we are at the right time, with the right generation… to win AFCON.
The Kagiso-born mentor served as Bafana Bafana assistant coach from 2007 until he got the head coach job from Carlos Alberto Parreira post the 2010 World Cup.
He was relieved of his duties after a disappointing home draw with Ethiopia in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.
During his spell as head coach, Mosimane was in charge of 17 matches, winning six, drawing eight, and losing three.
