Almost four years after the devastating July 2021 unrest that left over 300 people dead and businesses looted and torched in KwaZulu and Gauteng, one of the prominent people accused of inciting violence will appear in court.
Duduzile Zuma, former President Jacob Zuma’s daughter, will appear in the Durban Magistrate Court on Thursday this week.
Duduzile and her twin brother Duduzane are now active politicians and members of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party, founded and led by Zuma.
She was elected MP after the May 2024 general elections. Duduzile also represents South Africa at the Pan African Parliament.
Her court appearance was announced by the MK Party on X (formerly Twitter). The party gave no details about the charges she will face except that they emanate from the unrest.
“Hon. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla (@DZumaSambudla) will be appearing at the Durban Magistrates Court on the 30th January 2025, at 09H00. This is an invitation to mobilize all ground forces to attend in numbers,” the MKP said, pleading with members to come out in their numbers.
During the unrest, Duduzile was all over X, posting messages that may have been deemed to be inciting violence.
The unrest was sparked by the incarceration of Zuma for contempt of the Constitutional Court. This was after the former president failed to comply with the apex court’s directive to appear before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
Duduzile joins a growing list of the July unrest suspects, including former MKP Youth Leader Bonginkosi Khanyile, accused of inciting violence.
The cases against some of the accused, however, have been dismissed by the courts after numerous postponements.
Former Ukhozi FM presenter, Ngizwe Mchunu once faced similar charges in the Randburg magistrate court in Gauteng, but was later acquitted.
