East Africa Electric Highway Project Enables Energy Security in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania - African Times

East Africa Electric Highway Project Enables Energy Security in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania

East Africa has successfully tested the transmission of electricity from Kenya to Tanzania, marking a critical milestone for the East Africa Electric Highway project. This achievement follows the launch of the Ethiopia-Kenya power interconnection, which laid the foundation for a fully integrated regional electricity grid.

The main objective of this initiative is to provide reliable, affordable and renewable energy throughout the Eastern region, which will facilitate greater regional cooperation and economic growth. This is reported by DNE Africa, a partner of TV BRICS.

With abundant renewable energy resources – hydro, wind, solar and geothermal – Ethiopia is poised to become a key player in the regional energy market. In the next ten years, the country will be able to generate up to 60,000 TWh of electricity to meet growing demand both domestically and in neighbouring regions.

Successful energy linkages between Ethiopia, Kenya and recently with Tanzania emphasise Ethiopia’s strategic role in the development of East Africa’s energy sector.

Ethiopia is expected to increase exports of green electricity, which could generate up to US$200 million per year, providing needed income for the country and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
