The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the National Freedom Party (NFP) have agreed to attend a joint meeting of the so-called “black and progressive political parties” to discuss plans for a coalition government that will see the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) ousted in KwaZulu-Natal.

The African National Congress (ANC), which holds 17 of the 80 seats in the provincial legislature, is still mum, and early indications suggest that without the approval from Luthuli House, they will not be part of the talks.

The EFF and the NFP agreed to the meeting following a request from Tony Yengeni, the second deputy president of the Umkhonto WeSizwe (MK Party), to all three parties to attend a meeting on 8 March 2026 in a venue yet to be determined.

The plan is to discuss how seats would be allocated once the DA and the IFP are kicked out.

“These discussions are ongoing and form part of the efforts to establish a stable, inclusive and effective governance framework for the province,” Yengeni wrote to the parties.

The Acting Secretary-General of the NFP, Bheki Xaba, swiftly accepted the invitation.

“We welcome this progressive initiative and hereby affirm our readiness and commitment to attend the meeting scheduled for 8 March 2026,” Xaba wrote in response to Yengeni’s letter.

Following suit, Marshall Dlamini, the Secretary-General of the EFF, also accepted the invitation.

“On behalf of the Economic Freedom Fighters (“EFF”), we write to accept the invitation for the meeting scheduled to be convened on Sunday, the 8th of March 2026,” Dlamini wrote.
