Limpopo – A South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member has died after elephants trampled him to death while on a farm in Musina, Limpopo.

SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala said Private Xavier Raynard, a member of the 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment, died at Esme Four ZZ2 farm on Sunday night.

He was deployed under Operation Corona, and was found dead near the SANDF base. His service weapon was recovered at the scene.

“Early indications suggest that he may have been fatally trampled by a herd of elephants while conducting routine patrols in the area,” said Tshabalala.

“The matter is under investigation by SANDF authorities in co-operation with environmental and wildlife officials to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. A formal board of inquiry has been initiated.”

Tshabala said the incident happened on Sunday night near the banks of the Limpopo River in Musina, about 300 metres from the SANDF’s Madimbo operational base. Raynard was doing routine patrols on the Malala Drift road when he was killed.

Tshabalala added: “The matter is under investigation by SANDF authorities in co-operation with environmental and wildlife officials to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. A formal board of inquiry has been initiated.”

Tshabalala said Raynard’s next of kin in Kimberley had been formally notified, and psychosocial support was being provided to the family and the soldier’s colleagues.

Spokesperson for the SAPS in Thohoyandou, Police Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that a SANDF member was killed by elephants at Ezme Four ZZ2 farm on the banks of the Limpopo River. Dathi said the SAPS at Tshamutumbu have opened an inquest docket.

“Statements were obtained from various individuals as part of our ongoing investigations. Our earnest appeal is that police be given enough time and space to probe this sensitive matter thoroughly,” said Dathi.
