Two employees of the eThekwini municipality have been arrested for allegedly stealing 300 litres of diesel from municipal water tankers at eKukhanyeni near Verulam.

According to a statement from the municipality, the two were arrested last week following a tip-off that prompted investigators to tail them.

The investigators were driving around eKukhanyeni when they saw a municipal truck offloading diesel at a private residence while another truck was parked outside next to the gate of the same residence.

The trucks caught were carrying water promised for delivery to communities that survive by the water supply of those trucks.

The unnamed employees were arrested, and a case of theft was opened at the Inanda Police Station, and they are set to appear in court soon.

In a statement, Jimmy Ngcobo, the Head of the City Integrity and Investigations Unit, applauded the investigating team for doing an amazing job in catching the culprits.

Ngcobo assured the community that “Further investigations will be conducted in this area as it is alleged that diesel is frequently offloaded there”.

He also added that the stolen diesel is illegally resold.

“We will not allow employees to steal municipal resources. We urge the community to report fraud and corruption cases to be investigated, like in this instance.”
