Operations and functions of the Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) have fully moved to a digital format. This was stated in an interview with ENA, a partner of TV BRICS, by Deputy Commissioner of the ECC, Azezew Chane.

The Commission has created a digital system allowing importers and exporters to conduct their activities online. The system integrates more than 70 institutions and enables market participants to submit documents related to imports and exports in a single place, without delays or duplication.

At border customs posts, an intelligent control system is also being implemented, featuring AI-based cameras capable of monitoring an area of around 50 kilometres.

The system has been deployed across various regions of the country to control and track import and export operations. According to the ECC Deputy Commissioner, the digital system not only speeds up operations but also makes a significant contribution to combating illegal trade and smuggling while simultaneously supporting legal commerce. To simplify tax processes, electronic taxation, service, complaint submission, and receipt verification services have been introduced.

Various measures for the digitalisation of services began under the Digital Ethiopia-2025 strategy. The aim of the reforms is to build a digital economy. The next stage of the country’s technological transformation will be the implementation of the national Digital Ethiopia-2030 strategy.
