The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) today marks its first anniversary, celebrating significant progress in strengthening the capabilities of the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM).

Since its launch in September 2023, the mission, working closely with the FADM, has rolled out 16 capacity-building programmes that have trained and developed more than 500 Mozambican military personnel.

The initiatives, delivered through an integrated approach, covered key operational areas including Command and Control, Logistics, Training of Trainers for Rapid Reaction Force instructors, Resupply and Transport, Leadership, Military Pedagogy, Civil-Military Cooperation, Strategic Communication, and Institutional Advising to the General Staff. Alongside these, the EU has also invested in programmes to ensure the long-term sustainability of equipment provided under the European Peace Facility (EPF).

In a message shared on social media, EUMAM MOZ Force Commander Brigadier General Luís Barroso thanked the mission’s staff and partner countries for their support. He underlined the importance of cooperation with the FADM, noting that more than 500 soldiers had already benefited from training and capacity development programmes.

The Chief of the General Staff of Mozambique, General Júlio dos Santos Jane, praised the mission’s achievements, expressing hopes that “this anniversary serves as a reminder of the positive impact you have in Mozambique and around the world, as well as a motivation to continue serving with the same enthusiasm and dedication. Congratulations to EUMAM MOZ, and may we continue working together for a future of peace and prosperity, free from terrorism and other threats to peace and progress.”

Ambassador Antonino Maggiore, Head of the EU Delegation to Mozambique, described the mission as a cornerstone of the EU’s security cooperation with Mozambique, reinforcing a partnership that has been ongoing since 2021.

EUMAM MOZ is a non-executive mission, focusing on building the FADM’s capacity to sustain the operational cycle of the Rapid Reaction Forces, while ensuring full respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. Its current mandate runs until June 2026.

The mission is led by Portuguese Brigadier General Luís Barroso and involves 83 military personnel from 11 EU member states.
