Embattled Zulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini is facing a fresh headache after one of his wives filed court papers to interdict his upcoming marriage to his third wife, Queen Nomzamo Myeni of Jozini in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The much anticipated royal marriage is billed for 24 and 26 January this year in Nongoma and Jozini respectively.
The wife who is seeking an interdict is the same woman King Misuzulu is divorcing. She cannot be named to protect their children as required by the law.
The court papers for the interdict have been filed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court in KwaZulu-Natal, the same court the King filed his divorce papers against her..
The aggrieved wife filed her papers on an urgent basis on Friday, January 10. She wants the matter to be heard on 20 January 2025.
The interdicting wife claims that she is still married to the King in a civil marriage and as such, he cannot marry another woman. If he does that, it would amount to bigamy, an offence that is punishable in South Africa.
“It is my humble submission that this honorable court is empowered to stop the respondent (King Misuzulu) from committing the offence of bigamy. I confirm that the matter is urgent as the respondent has shown his intent by even issuing a date for the ceremony (marriage),” the wife said in court papers.
She confirmed to the court that there is a planned meeting presumably to discuss the upcoming marriage, but she said the date is in February and the meeting will take place after the marriage has taken place.
“I confirm that a meeting has been set up to discuss the said marriage that my husband wishes to enter into. However, that meeting has now been postponed to a date in February which will be after the marriage has taken place. I humbly submit that the respondent will suffer no prejudice if this order is granted as he can still take a second wife once the law allows,” the wife said in the court papers.
The wife is represented by Advocate Mandla Luthuli who is instructed by Donda Attorneys in Durban. King Misuzulu has yet to file his responding papers.
