FIFA Intervenes in Racism Saga in England

World football governing body FIFA has condemned the racist abuse directed at Bournemouth and Ghanaian star Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match against Liverpool.

The Black Stars international appeared to be targeted by a 47-year-old man in a wheelchair as he went for a throw-in at Anfield. Merseyside Police confirmed the man was ejected from the stadium and taken into custody.

Referee Anthony Taylor was forced to stop the match to address the incident, speaking to both managers and captains, before allowing playing to continue.

Despite the abuse, Semenyo scored a brace on Friday night, as Liverpool won 4-2 in the season opener.

“Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination—Antoine’s courage and performance on the pitch, despite such adversity, is a powerful example of strength and dignity for players worldwide,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.

“The Players’ Voice Panel, established as part of the five pillars against racism adopted by FIFA Congress in 2024, will be in touch with Antoine and is monitoring these situations closely.

“We are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected and that competition organizers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action.”

Bournemouth, meanwhile, has leapt to Semenyo’s defence, praising the 25-year-old for his resilience.

“A great player but, above all, a great human being. Only a strong character shows such resilience in those circumstances. We love you and are all with you, Antoine.”

The police added the matter is now under investigation, with the world watching with keen interest to see what action is taken.
