Following weeks of waiting, Kaizer Chiefs have brought in winger Asanele Velebayi.
Amakhosi confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old on Tuesday.
“We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi,” stated Chiefs.
“The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs family!”
African Times understands Velebayi has signed for four years.
His signing was long overdue.
Chiefs made efforts to sign him last year, but his former employers, Cape Town Spurs, insisted he was worth R10 million, with club boss Ari Efstathiou labelling him a “diamond” and urging interested suitors to cough up.
“Asanele is a diamond and diamonds don’t come cheap,” said Efstathiou exactly one year ago.
At the time, Chiefs were offering R5 million, and therefore, the two parties were far apart.
This year, Chiefs renewed their interest, and when Spurs were relegated to the third division—ABC Motsepe League—Chiefs moved in to sign him as a free agent, but Spurs argued that their amateur status did not mean Velebayi and company were free agents and their contracts were still “valid,” contrary to popular belief.
On Monday, the Premier Soccer League dispute resolution chamber (DRC) ruled in the player’s favour that he is indeed a free agent and may join a team of his choice.
Chiefs did not waste any time, and Velebayi has been Khosified.
