The Premier Soccer League (PSL) new trophy has been handed over to the champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, and the tongues are wagging.
The Brazilians got their hands on the trophy on Sunday, following their 2-0 win over Magesi FC at Loftus Stadium to complete their impressive season.
The trophy was trending overnight.
Nelson Makamo, a renowned international artist, was tasked last year with the responsibility to design the first-ever Betway Premiership trophy. Finally, the wait is over.
For some, it’s a “unique” piece but Makamo will have to take the good with the bad on this one as he has also been slated for creating a “terrible” trophy.
On social media platform X, @t_junction1 shared his thoughts: “Jealous down this trophy is so beautiful. 8/10.”
However, @lucaskagiso wasn’t as complimentary. “If I came across this in my room in the middle of the night, I’d damn well faint. 1/10, doesn’t inspire anything, totally out of touch, doesn’t look like a football trophy. It’s just messy 🚮”
Makamo was on hand to explain the design recently.
“The trophy is gold and silver. We avoided wood because we want to create something that will last for a very long time.
“So, silver represents the past, while gold is for the present and the future.”
Whether this trophy can stand the test of time remains to be seen.
