A former police officer has been convicted and sentenced to 15-years direct imprisonment by the Mokopane’s Regional Court in Limpopo.

According to Limpopo Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Sergeant Nierush Seanego (39), formerly attached to Mahwelereng Visible Policing, has been slapped with a hefty long-term incarceration after being found guilty of robbing a motorist, while in a marked police vehicle along the N1 road.

“The conviction stems from an incident in February 2023, when the complainant was stopped near Nyl Plaza by a marked police vehicle and a silver Toyota Yaris. And was forcibly removed from their vehicle, searched, and robbed of R20,000 by the accused and his accomplices before they fled the scene,” Colonel Ledwaba said.

Following an intensive investigation that lasted for a year by the Limpopo Anti-Corruption Unit, together with the Polokwane Tactical Response Team, Seanego was arrested at his homestead in Mahwelereng township, after evidence gathered linked to him.

Ledwaba added that while the accused was in detention at the Mokopane SAPS after being denied bail, he appealed the ruling with the Polokwane High Court and was granted bail.

Following a series of trial appearances, Seanego was ultimately found guilty and convicted on 10, March 2025. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

After a week of a reserved sentencing, the former cop was slapped with a 15-years imprisonment on Monday, 17, March 2025.

Late February, another police officer, together with other assailants, was arrested in Seshego Zone 5, outside Polokwane, Limpopo after he was found in possession of a gun that killed a police Sergeant during a robbery.

According to Limpopo Hawks Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, the suspects stole the victim’s service pistol, laptops, and cell phones from the deceased’s house at Staanplaas in Lebowakgomo, and fled the scene in a white bakkie that was waiting outside the yard.

“During questioning, the Constable led the police to recover Z88 – 9mm pistol, 32 rounds, magazines, and two cartridges which were wrapped in black plastic and hidden underneath the corrugated iron sheets at the back of the house. The firearm was positively identified by the serial number as the one reported stolen at Staanplaas, where the police sergeant was murdered,” said Mmuroa.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the outstanding work of the Anti-Corruption Unit and the Polokwane Tactical Response Team, in their efforts to root out corruption within the police force.

“This conviction and sentencing will send a strong message that SAPS will not tolerate corruption within its ranks. We remain committed to upholding the integrity of our service and restoring public confidence in law enforcement,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
