A crime intelligence-driven operation led to a deadly shootout in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning, leaving four suspected armed robbers dead, one injured and arrested, and three illegal firearms recovered.
According to police, the operation unfolded at approximately 05:30 on 25 March 2026 after intelligence was received about a group allegedly linked to a series of armed robberies targeting travellers from OR Tambo International Airport.
The information was swiftly analysed and operationalised by a multi-disciplinary team comprising SAPS Counter Intelligence, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team (TRT), Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect.
Authorities reported that the suspects were travelling in a Suzuki Swift fitted with false registration plates, believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes.
Police attempted to intercept the vehicle in Yeoville, triggering a high-speed chase through the area. The situation escalated into a shootout after the suspects allegedly opened fire on law enforcement officers.
Four suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange, while a fifth suspect sustained injuries. The injured suspect was arrested at the scene and is currently under police guard.
Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered following the incident.
Police have since opened cases of murder, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The Serious and Violent Crimes Investigations unit has taken over the case and will continue probing the incident, working closely with Crime Intelligence to establish the identities of the suspects and their possible links to other crimes.
The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in previous criminal activities, particularly the string of robberies targeting airport travellers.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the details of the operation, stating: “This intelligence-led operation is part of our ongoing efforts to dismantle organised crime networks targeting vulnerable victims, particularly those travelling from the airport. We will not hesitate to act decisively against heavily armed suspects who pose a threat to public safety and our members.”
She added that the swift coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies played a critical role in the success of the operation, preventing further crimes and removing dangerous weapons from the streets.
Police have urged members of the public to continue reporting criminal activity through the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS mobile application. The investigation remains ongoing.
