The village of Bobole, in northern Maputo province, has, in recent times, been the stage for several tragic events. This week, the community was left in shock and anger following the brutal murder of a young man who worked as a motorcycle taxi rider. His body was discovered at the bottom of a well approximately 45 metres deep — a grim end that sparked outrage among local residents.
Efforts were made to retrieve the body, with the fire brigade called in to assist. However, despite their attempts, they were unable to recover it. It was then that a courageous young man, now hailed as a hero in Bobole, took matters into his own hands.
Equipped with a mask, goggles, and a mobile phone, the man tied himself to a rope, descended into the well, and successfully brought the body back to the surface.
In an exclusive interview with TV Sucesso, the young man, identified as Alberto Maluana, criticised the fire brigade for their limited efforts. “They barely did anything,” he stated. “That’s why I took the risk.” Maluana added that he now feels ready to serve his country and intends to apply to the Armed Forces.
Mob Justice and a Shocking Feast
Enraged by the murder, the local population marched to the house of the main suspect — who is currently in police custody — and set fire to his vehicle, home, and other possessions. In a disturbing escalation, even the family’s dogs were attacked. One of the animals succumbed to its injuries, despite having no involvement in the crime.
Amid the chaos, a pig kept at the suspect’s home escaped. Once the situation calmed and the animal returned, the community — still fuelled by anger and emotion — decided to slaughter the pig and eat it, claiming it helped them “regain the energy” lost during the destruction of the suspect’s property.

A Crime Scene Marked by the Community
In a final act of collective mourning and defiance, the locals marked off the area where the young man was allegedly killed, turning it into an informal memorial. Flowers, candles, and handwritten messages now lie at the site — a stark reminder of the tragedy that has left Bobole in mourning.
While police continue their investigation, no official statement has yet been issued regarding the mob actions or the community’s handling of the crime scene.
For now, the people of Bobole remain united in grief, anger, and a burning desire for justice — even if that justice comes on their own terms.
