A costly goalkeeping error denied Kaizer Chiefs victory against Polokwane City on Saturday, while Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to settle for a draw after surrendering a late lead against Chippa United.

Chiefs appeared on course for back-to-back victories at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo after Lebohang Maboe gave them the lead in the 29th minute.

But their advantage disappeared in the second half when Polokwane City were gifted an equaliser through a costly error involving goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

Giovanni Philander’s direct corner found its way into the net as Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw.

The dropped points will frustrate coach Fernando da Cruz, whose side have repeatedly been punished for defensive mistakes this season. Chiefs slipped to fourth place on 12 points after six matches.

The draw also continued the scrutiny on Petersen, whose recent performances have included costly errors. The goalkeeper had already come under pressure following mistakes against Golden Arrows and Richards Bay.

At the other end of the country, Sundowns also surrendered two points when Chippa United held them to a 1-1 draw at Buffalo City Stadium.

Chippa looked set for a major upset after Sergio Kammies put the home side ahead in the 78th minute. Sundowns, however, rescued a point deep into stoppage time when Antonio Van Wyk struck in the 94th minute.

Despite the late escape, the result means the defending champions missed an opportunity to strengthen their position at the top of the Betway Premiership.

For Chiefs, however, the frustration will be sharper. Having controlled much of the match and taken the lead, another defensive lapse left them with only a point, once again raising questions about their ability to protect an advantage.
