Two accused persons, Zacharia Chisele, 53, an official at Tembisa Hospital, and Sergeant Papi Tsie, 41, a Hawks officer, have been granted bail of R5 000 each by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court. Both face charges of corruption following an alleged attempt to influence an ongoing investigation.
The two were arrested after an alleged incident on 23 November 2025, when they reportedly met with a Hawks investigating officer handling a corruption probe at Tembisa Hospital. During the meeting, it is alleged that Chisele and Tsie offered a gratification of R100 000 to the Hawks officer to avoid prosecution in the ongoing investigation.
During the bail hearing, the State did not oppose their release. Prosecutor Ngoako Mokumo presented an affidavit from Investigating Officer Captain Johannes Labuschagne confirming that both accused have verified addresses, no previous convictions or pending cases, and are not considered flight risks.
The court has postponed the case to 27 February 2026 to allow for further investigation.
NPA Regional Spokesperson for Gauteng, Lumka Mahanjana, said the investigation is ongoing, and all parties involved are expected to cooperate fully with the authorities.
The case highlights continuing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address corruption within public institutions and ensure accountability among officials.
Chisele and Tsie remain out on bail pending the next court appearance, as authorities continue to gather evidence and investigate the alleged bribery attempt.
