Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele has taken a major step in his coaching career by enrolling for the CAF A Licence.
The former Bafana Bafana winger has been touted as a possible replacement to succeed head coach Hugo Broos when the Belgian retires at the end of the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Mkhalele, however, has no coaching qualifications, as alluded to by Broos.
“The only problem with Helman is that he doesn’t have the qualifications,” said Broos recently, making it clear Mkhalele is the right man for the job, despite his lack of qualifications. “You can avoid that if Helman can follow the courses for the UEFA Pro Licence because you need that as a coach of the national team.”
The 56-year-old will finally get the ball rolling to acquire the CAF A Licence, which is a mandatory requirement for head coaches to sit on the bench during international matches and inter-club competitions, such as the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup.
The Lesotho Football Association (LFA) has now confirmed that Mkhalele is amongst 24 participants who have enrolled for the CAF A Licence, including former Bafana Bafana teammate David Nyathi.
“The first block is scheduled for November 18th to 25th at Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena,” confirmed LFA.
During his playing career, Mkhalele played 66 matches for the senior national team and was a part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
