Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos is not at all bothered by keyboard warriors as he continues to guide South Africa’s senior football national team.
The 73-year-old has been at the helm since 2021, and not only has Bafana Bafana improved on the FIFA rankings (position 75 to 59), but the team finished third in the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as well as qualifying for the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Despite this, Broos has had his fair share of criticism, especially when snubbing certain players, most recently the in-form Thembinkosi Lorch.
“Well, thank you for telling me that because I didn’t know about it. You know how I feel about social media; I don’t follow that at all. And I think if I should read those things, I should laugh,” said Broos, ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (15H00).
“Those are people who think they are important on social media, and they can say what they want. It’s really nonsense, it’s ridiculous, and it doesn’t affect me at all. But thank you for mentioning it.”
This would be Bafana Bafana’s last match before the AFCON, though there are rumours that Broos is still trying to secure one more friendly.
“I said that maybe for me, 75 percent of the selection is made for AFCON,” he added.
“But now it’s only to see a few positions, maybe this one or the other one. But that is the most important thing for me that we don’t have any doubts anymore, and we can start the preparation on the 8th of December, and we don’t have surprises anymore.”
