India’s tourism sector is poised for a period of transformative growth, projected to generate 24 million new job opportunities in tier 2 and 3 cities by 2033, fuelled by the rapid development of these smaller urban centres, according to a new report. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

This expansion is expected to create a more balanced workforce, comprising 75 per cent male and 25 per cent female talent. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), India’s travel and tourism GDP is anticipated to grow at an average annual rate of 7.1 per cent over the next decade.

The tourism and hospitality sector currently contributes around 8 per cent to India’s total employment, and this momentum is predicted to accelerate further, with sectoral spending expected to increase by 1.2 times by 2034.

While metropolitan hubs have historically dominated India’s tourism economy, tier 2 and 3 cities are now emerging as significant contributors, driven by travellers increasingly seeking unexplored destinations, the rise of post-pandemic staycations, and enhanced connectivity.
