New initiatives focus on academic mobility, innovation partnerships and strengthening Indonesia’s position in global higher education

Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates are expanding cooperation in higher education, with a particular focus on developing digital skills, strengthening research collaboration and increasing international student mobility, reports ANTARA.
The issue was discussed during a meeting in Jakarta between representatives of Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the UAE diplomatic mission. The talks were received by Deputy Minister Stella Christie.
According to the ministry, the two sides explored ways to encourage greater academic exchange and promote Indonesia as a destination for international students.
“We want to expand the presence of international students in Indonesia because it plays an important role in improving the reputation and global ranking of universities,” Christie said.
She noted that international students contribute to academic diversity and help institutions broaden their global outlook, while also encouraging universities to continuously enhance the quality of teaching and research.
To support this goal, the ministry is preparing an initiative to establish a Centre for Foreign Students. The platform is expected to simplify support services for international learners and strengthen the internationalisation of Indonesia’s higher education system.
During the discussions, both sides also considered plans for study visits by students from the UAE. The programme would allow participants to explore Indonesian universities, learn about the national education system and gain a deeper understanding of the country’s culture and academic opportunities.
In addition to student exchanges, the meeting addressed potential collaboration in digital talent development. A key topic was a large-scale coding initiative launched in the UAE aimed at equipping young people with skills in artificial intelligence and software development.
The programme seeks to expand digital expertise among youth and support the transition towards a knowledge-based economy, opening new opportunities for joint research and innovation between the two countries.
