President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has instructed the expansion of the international airport network across the country, according to Antara News.

“The president ordered the opening of as many international airports as possible in various regions,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

It was noted that Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport has reinstated international status for three airports: Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport (Palembang), H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin Airport (Bangka Belitung), and General Ahmad Yani Airport (Semarang).

Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the decision is linked to the increase in passenger traffic following the pandemic. The reopening of international routes is seen as a step towards stimulating the economy and developing tourism.
