Kenya has officially sent its first cargo to China under a zero-tariff framework, a move leaders are describing as transformative for the country’s trade and economic growth, according to Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation.

The inaugural shipment of 54 containers, featuring avocados, coffee, avocado oil, and other products, departed Nairobi Railway Station with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in attendance. The goods will travel via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Port of Mombasa for onwards shipment to China.

Deputy President of Kenya Kithure Kindiki hailed the arrangement as a structural shift in Kenya’s trade model, emphasising its role in moving the country toward an export-led economy. He highlighted that duty-free access for key products, including tea, coffee, avocados, nuts, flowers, and minerals, will enhance competitiveness in the Chinese market and boost incomes for farmers, traders, and export-orientated enterprises.

He explained that the zero-tariff framework, agreed by Kenyan President William Ruto and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aims to expand Kenya’s export presence in China, particularly for value-added goods.

“With improved logistics through the SGR and expanding market access, our products can now reach China faster and more competitively than ever before,” stated Cabinet Secretary of Kenya Lee Kinyanjui.

Kanya’s Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Davis Chirchir underscored the role of infrastructure in implementing the trade deal. He highlighted the SGR’s significance, which has already transported over 15.2 million passengers and 45 million tonnes of freight, and introduced the Kenya–China Cool Logistics Corridor to streamline trade. Leaders placed the initiative in the context of Kenya–China relations since 1963, noting China’s support in infrastructure development, manufacturing, and energy projects, and emphasised the partnership’s resilience.
