South African wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane has reached the Roland Garros semi-finals after a straight sets victory against China’s Ziying Wang on Thursday.
The 39-year-old from Seshego in Limpopo province overpowered fourth seed Wang 6-2 and 6-4, to progress to the last four.
Montjane, who celebrated her birthday on 3 June, will be tested again when she meets Aniek Van Koot, who hails from the Netherlands, on Friday.
Montjane has come close on the red clay on three occasions, making it to the French Open semi-finals in 2013, 2021 and 2022.
Last year’s champion Diede de Groot was knocked out in the round of 16.
The number one seed this year is Japan’s Yui Kamiji and she too has made it to the semi-finals.
Interestingly, Kamiji partners Montjane in the doubles event. They’ve made it to the semi-finals.
