English club Leeds United has once again recognized its former captain, Lucas Radebe.
Nicknamed ‘The Chief’ by Leeds’s die-hard supporters, Radebe has been named the club’s first Global Ambassador.
This was confirmed by Leeds United chief executive officer (CEO) Angus Kinnear on Tuesday evening, a day after the team won promotion back to the English Premier League, where they used to belong.
Kinnear was speaking to renowned South African broadcaster Robert Marawa on the Marawa Sport Show.
The former Bafana Bafana skipper is held in high regard by many at Leeds United for his contribution to the club from 1994 to 2005. Radebe ran out in Leeds colours a credible 262 times, with 124 of those appearances as captain.
Off the field, his legendary status at the club has seen some interesting developments; a bus in Leeds was named after him, a beer called Radebeer, and until today, fans still name their new borns Lucas, their revered former defender, who was capped 70 times by Bafana Bafana.
Leeds bought Radebe from Kaizer Chiefs for £250,000 (R6 million in today’s exchange rate) and considered a bargain; the return on that investment was otherwise worth more given his contribution.
