The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has strongly condemned the behaviour of a Mercedes-Benz driver arrested for allegedly travelling at 194km/h on the N1 near Sondela in Modimolle on Monday morning.
The department expressed concern over motorists who continue to disregard road safety regulations, warning that reckless driving puts the lives of innocent road users at risk.
In a media statement, the department said Limpopo traffic officers arrested the driver after clocking 194km/h. The motorist was subsequently detained at the Bela-Bela South African Police Service (SAPS) station.
In condemning the incident, the department described excessive speeding as irresponsible behaviour that demonstrates a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of other motorists and passengers.
The department warned that driving at excessive speeds significantly increases the risk of serious and fatal crashes, urging motorists to obey prescribed speed limits and exercise caution on the roads.
It further emphasised that traffic officers would continue to maintain a visible presence on provincial roads and intensify enforcement operations to address speeding and other dangerous driving practices.
The department reiterated that reckless driving would not be tolerated and warned that law enforcement would continue without compromise in efforts to save lives.
Ahead of the festive season, the department has moved to urge motorists to make responsible decisions behind the wheel, with the department reminding the public that road safety is a shared responsibility.
