Kaizer Chiefs-bound Luke Baartman has won his case against amateur side Cape Town Spurs.

Baartman and Spurs were on a warpath, meeting before the Premier Soccer League (PSL) dispute resolution chamber (DRC).

Baartman claimed he should be declared a free agent since his “professional contract” with Spurs was now “invalid” because the club has been relegated from the professional ranks to the ABC Motsepe League.

Spurs, in turn, stood firm on the legal principle of pacta sunt servanda: a contract is a contract.

The DRC ruled in favour of Baartman. Spurs suffered the same fate in a similar case against Asanele Velebayi, who went on to sign for Kaizer Chiefs this month.

African Times can confirm that Baartman is also on his way to Naturena.

Spurs are, however, likely to file an appeal with the SAFA Tribunal, as they did with the Velebayi matter.

Be that as it may, Velebayi has spoken of his joy at realizing his dream of playing for Kaizer Chiefs despite the appeal barring him from making his debut for Chiefs until the matter is finalized.

“I can’t even describe the feeling. When I heard the news that I was officially joining Kaizer Chiefs, the first thing I did was call my mother and family to share the good news. I was so happy. It has always been my dream to come here, and I aim to make the most of this amazing opportunity,” said Velebayi.

“I want to thank the supporters for the warm welcome I have received. I really hope we all have a wonderful season together.”
